Community Care Market News - In lieu of the arrival of highly anticipated Green Paper on adult social care, care minister Phil Hope has today (9 July) launched the first wave of specialist dementia advisors which have begun work in 22 centres across the country.

As promised in the Department of Health's (DH) recent national dementia strategy, a network of so-called demonstrator sites have now opened, each providing a range of services to support people with the condition.

In 22 of these facilities, newly trained advisors will act as guides to help sufferers and their families to navigate the care and support available to them in their area and as the illness develops. An additional 18 sites will test different styles of support including 'dementia cafes' where people with the condition will be encouraged to meet up and share their experiences.

A number of the sites will also focus on providing services to hard-to-reach groups such as those people with learning disabilities and who come from black and minority ethnic (BME) groups.

Commenting on the launch, Mr Hope said: 'We know that people with dementia and their familes are under huge strain. Dementia advisors will be there for them when they need help, from diagnosis onwards.'
