South Gloucestershire pulls care home developments
Following in the footsteps of the beleaguered Highland council (CCMN July 2010), South Gloucestershire council has come in for resident criticism this
month with the news that long standing plans to build two new residential care homes have been cancelled in favour of a move to outsource the
services.
Councillors have admitted that they are reviewing plans first released last autumn which were set to close eight existing authority-run facilities with
replacement capacity being provided through increased homecare services, a network of extra care developments and two new council-funded
purpose-built nursing homes (CCMN August/September 2009). However, with tightened budgets called for the council claims that it may no longer be
appropriate to push forward with in house investment of the proposed nursing homes.
